Who is more likely to contract type 1 diabetes?

A belief held by some researchers is that the contraction may be from a virus in the way that it does with a common cold. It could simply be that someone who has been in the environment of someone with type 1 diabetes, if they have a tendency to being predisposed, can catch it, just like someone can catch a cold from being around someone sneezing.
When the virus attacks the pancreas, it has an effect on the body's ability to produce insulin and so follows, the diabetic condition. It could be that a natural substance existing in the body can be a part of the virus which can bring about the diabetes. If there is a shared substance between the pancreas and the diabetes, the antibodies will try to destroy the substance. This leaves you in a state which is the same as it would be if the virus attacked the pancreas.
Researchers hold a theory which says that just 10 per cent of patients who contract type 1 diabetes require any kind of trigger. In this case, it a simple case of an auto immune destruction of the beta cells. Should an individual be classed in this category, it is possible that he also has other autoimmune diseases.
There has been research continuing for years on how likely it is that an individual can contract type 1 diabetes just because there is a sufferer in the family. The data which has been collated that there is only a relatively small chance of this occurring if your sibling has it but that the genetics of the parents is more of a factor.
