Tips To Manage Your Diabetes

Diabetes has become all too common for American adults in the last few decades. This disease can be frightening, but if you dedicate yourself to becoming healthier and following a few of these tips, you can help keep your diabetes under control and reduce its ill effects.

Balancing your diet is possibly the trickiest part of managing diabetes, and you might believe you have to give up all of your favorite foods. This is not necessarily true, but you should cut out the bulk of junk foods and heavily processed foods, especially sodas and sugar-sweetened drinks. Water is truly the best choice for diabetics, and for that matter, all of us. So throw out all of your sugary drinks. Once in a while, you can order them at a restaurant, but don't keep them at your home.

Do a big purge and just dump all the junk out of your house. Rid yourself of sodas, candy bars, potato chips, sugary cereals and all that other junk food. It doesn't mean you can't ever have a treat again, but don't bring it in your house. Eat one portion when you are out as a treat once in awhile instead. You can't cheat if the food isn't within easy reach.

It might not seem like it, but there really are many foods that diabetics can eat, and it doesn't just mean you are limited to protein and vegetables. Lean proteins and vegetables are great, but you can have some whole grains and fruits. Choose grains that are not heavily processed, and fruits that are lower in carbs, such as melons, berries, peaches and apples. Start searching for some new recipes so that you will be more interested in your new diet. Also, it is a great idea to make an appointment or two with a nutrition expert to make sure you know what is best to eat and in what amounts and when.

Food is one part of diabetes control, and exercise is another important component. You will be more likely to stick with your exercise routine if it is an activity you enjoy, such as swimming, dance or basketball. Joining a gym can be fun, as you can use equipment or take classes or both. Find a gym that meets all of your needs in regards to hours of operation, equipment, classes, location and child care. The more convenient the gym, the more likely you will go. Also, consider going with a friend to make the experience more social.

Discuss your needs with a professional before starting a program as exercise can affect insulin levels. Typically, though a good program that mixes strength training and aerobics will improve your overall health. It is also a great idea to get your whole family involved in a fitness program. Exercise is good for everyone and can help prevent diabetes. So try to get your children, at least, excited about some form of exercise, especially if it is an activity they can do for years to come.
