It is important to examine one's feet every day. If any signs of trauma, such as cuts; cracks; blisters or swelling are noticed, this should be reported to your doctor with immediate affect. If you are finding it difficult to check your feet you could try using a mirror or asking someone close to you look at them for you.
Making sure that the shoes you wear fit correctly on your feet is very important but often times overlooked aspect of foot care. You feet should have enough room in the shoes to wiggle your toes. Make sure there are no objects in your shoes, like stones or gravel, before putting them as this could cause irritation.
You should massage your feet with a moisturizing cream that conditions and exfoliates. This will help to gently remove dead skin and soften calluses around the toes, heels and bottoms. Special care should be given to your toe nails. Make sure that you keep your toe nails trimmed to a proper length. This is will minimize the possibility of development of ingrown toe nails.
If calluses or ingrown nails do appear, do not try to treat these conditions yourself. Always seek professional help from you doctor. They would be able to perform a proper diagnosis and prescribe the correct treatment options.
It is important to remember not try self-treat any issues you might find such as ingrown toe nails or calluses. Always consult a podiatrist to issues of this nature. If you have a proper with cracking of skin on the feet you can apply foot cream or petroleum jelly on the feet and heels but do not do so in the area between the toes. Cream sitting in those areas can cause the skin to be waterlogged and open to infection.
