Diabetes is defined as a chronic condition associated with abnormally high level of sugar or glucose in the blood. The said condition is caused by low or insufficient production of insulin which lowers blood glucose and produced by the pancreas. Diabetes is classified as a metabolism disorder which affects the way our bodies digest food for energy and growth. Diabetes is life long and thus requires continues treatment. Monitoring can be done with the help of a doctor as well as home monitoring using different tools such as a blood sugar monitor.

People may acquire either of the two types of diabetes: the insulin dependent diabetes or the non insulin diabetes, or simply type 1 and type 2 diabetes, respectively. Type 1 diabetes or insulin dependent mellitus (IDDM) is a type of diabetes characterized by the incapability of the pancreas to produce insulin. In this condition, the body undergoes autoimmune attack. The immune system also produces abnormal antibodies that damage the body's own body including the pancreas. The inability of the pancreas to produce insulin requires patients to rely on insulin medication in order to survive. Type 1 diabetes often attacks younger and lean individuals and is common among people under the age of 30.

Type 2 diabetes or non-insulin diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), on the other hand, is the type of diabetes common among adults-hence, this condition is also being referred to as adult onset diabetes mellitus or AODM. The pancreas of people suffering from this condition are still able to produce insulin, however, is insufficient for the body's need. Insulin produced is also sometimes defective and suboptimal that patients also eventually require insulin medication. Type 2 diabetes patients also have body cells that lack sensitivity to insulin. As this type of condition is common among adults, it is strongly recommended that their blood sugar is regularly monitored using blood sugar monitors to prevent other complications.

As blood sugar monitoring is vital in the treatment, if not prevention, of diabetes, keeping a blood sugar monitor at hand is very important. The normal range of blood sugar before meals is 70 to 120 mg/dl while it should be under 140 mg/dl after meals. Blood sugar levels should also be monitored daily before and after meals and before the patient's bedtime.

Blood sugar monitors usually consists of a lancing device and glucose meter as well as a record book. Monitoring is pricking one's finger using the lancet and applying the blood in the glucose meter which will read the value. The result should be recorded as it will serve as a basis in analyzing how the patient is responding to the treatment being done. Some of the more popular blood sugar monitors found in the market include Accu-Check Advantage, One Touch Ultra, Sure Step and Freestyle.

Diabetes is a disease which is classified as hereditary. Nonetheless, it may still be minimized or ultimately prevented if managed appropriately. Among the many ways people to accomplish such are a healthy diet, regular exercise and the constant monitoring of blood sugar levels through the use of blood sugar monitors.
